Why were so many of these, and freewheel, changed out, when clearly some of these bike were hardly used and taken care of... not reliable/upgrade ... ?
IMO the original aluminum spoke protector mostly failed due to being small and minimal operator maintenance to keep gears in alignment, a later gear upgrade could be made, which the OG derailleur could handle, and early larger steel spoke protector were usually used for added protection.

Maybe we should ask @Hobo Bill why he changed out his freewheel and protector. He's had his Corvette since new!

@Swinnagain64 's new ride was purchased from the original owner and it also was updated with a newer freewheel and spoke protecter. I added your Corvette to the Registry also Swinnagain64.
Over the years I've only come across three Corvette 5's with the late 50's butterfly handlebars. I'll take a good guess and say that some kids might have changed out their spoke protectors with the cool new chrome piece that came out in 1964 just because they liked how it looked.

Thanks all, for your input and wisdom. And thank you @GTs58 for adding it to the Registry. I am thankful to be the next caretaker. I am sure someone else will oversee it's future when I am done with it, hopefully a few decades from now.
