I think I have about 8 sets of original S2’s and none of mine show a gap in the knurling at the weld. That’s not a claim of any kind, only that none have come into my possession.

Why the gap? Factory anomaly? Relaxed QC in early 60’s production? Later foreign production?

I couldn’t say but if you’re intending to reconstruct a period correct Phantom as it would seem from the various inquiries you have made in multiple threads, don’t settle for a set of rims that would continually beg the question, “Are your wheels original Chicago built?”

I’m curious. Is it your intention to build or restore a Phantom from parts? Or are you simply trying to learn how to identify original equipment while searching for a complete bike?
