I just stumbled back across a set of Carlisle tires that I can verify with bike serial number. Stamped C(2 9)4. Hhmmm

Bike is a Feb 79 Murray Monterey. I got it from the original owner's daughter...who's daughter wrecked it into a parked car, lmao. I bought the bike for the tires, and as you might know these Murrays were some of the last to have American made rubber on them.

So, did Carlisle change to UU(##)# date code some time in 79, or was the UU just another factory designator...?

Here is a WW Carlisle Lightning Dart Tire with the later Carlisle Date Code. does not have the "Indian Head" on sidewall ... UU (2-7) 2 ... and I would decipher as February 1977. We know that Carlisle had closed Feb., 28, 1987, the end, 1987 Tire? , it could not be 1967 due to Date Code change. That said ...
Your WW Carlisle Lightning Dart, C ( 2 - 9) 4 , uses the earlier Carlisle Date Code, this tire design has been around since the '50's, 1959, maybe ... 1969 maybe ... 1979? Questionable. I would decipher as Feb. 1969.
Please correct me if I'm wrong as I am still scratching my head over the conception of the UU (##) # Date Code.
Confused Yet?

I'm certain of the 79 date in this case. I've found numerous late 70s, early 80s Murray Montereys with these tires. It's not until now that I really cared about the date codes though. The UU stamps still have me scratching my head too.

Here is a Date Code from a WW Uniroyal "Nobby" Tire 24" x 2.125" that is on a 1979 Schwinn Spitfire ... Uniroyal with Carlisle Date Code C (3-9) ... March 1979.
Uniroyal stopped manufacturing in 1971 and the Uniroyal date code for 1969 would be "UA" .

The last couple days I have been through at least 100+ Uniroyal, Carlisle Tire Date Codes.
The earliest 26" Schwinn Studded Balloon Tire Date Code that I have seen is the one you posted ...
UU (10 9) 2, October 1979, I have a BW Schwinn Studded Balloon that has a UU (11 9) 2, Nov. 1979.
Anyone with a Schwinn Studded Balloon Tire Date Code that is earlier? ... UU (# #) #

Here are some Carlisle Tires that you don't see often ... The Carlisle 26" x 2.125" Gumwall that I posted before and a 20" x 2.125" WW General Saf-T-Cleat Tire that have the same Tread Pattern.
Both have Carlisle Date Code. ... Nobby, Studded, Saf-T-Cleat Tires.
Back to shoveling more Snow & Ice!

MARCO!

And we see that from 1959 to 1969, a ten year run, the code begins to repeat itself in 1970, completely skipping UU. By 1970, the date of this announcement, U.S. Rubber had been renamed UNIROYAL. "In 1961, the company became Uniroyal, Inc.[4] The Uniroyal name was applied to all its operating components and products by 1967, creating a unified brand.[5]" (Wikipedia). And then, in 1970 Uniroyal discontinued manufacturing tires.

So, who took over? Did the repeating chart just disappear? And why were there Uniroyal Nobby tires on Marks 1976 Cali?
Total Speculation on my part from this post above, information about United States Rubber Co., being renamed ... UNIROYAL, to unify the brand.
Uniroyal in 1970 discontinued manufacturing bicycle tires.
Carlisle then must have acquired the Uniroyal bicycle tire molds contracted by SCHWINN.
Carlisle manufactured these tires using their Bicycle Tire Date Code. ... C (# - #) #
"C" stands for Carlisle (month - year) dot or # ... plant mfg. number.
By unifying Uniroyal & Carlise bicycle tire molds, somewhere in the late 1970's Carlisle changed their Bicycle Date Code to ... UU (# - #) #
"UU" stands for United States Rubber & Uniroyal Inc. (month -year) # ... plant mfg. number.
Again, total speculation on my part.😜
