First, I'm sorry to bust on your nice original paint bike. But it is a perfect visual example of what was discussed in monthly Schwinn Sales and Planning meetings.

In the year 1979, the sport of BMX was in full swing, like every other bicycle craze, it started first in California and spread East. The Schwinn Sales West management was standing on the roof tops yelling for Schwinn BMX models that their west coast Schwinn dealerships desired to sell. Since the new fads took a year or two to work their way across the country, the Schwinn Sales Midwest and Eastern Sales companies said what's the big deal, you Western guys are over stating what the real demand is for these newfangled things you call BMX bikes. The eastern dealers were still selling gold plated Sting Ray accessories. In the West, we responded by stocking and selling BMX Bike Kits. Buy a BMX frame and the Bike Kit and you could assemble one BMX bike. The (Schwinn Sales exclusive) Roger DeCoster frames were made by Skip Hess's (SR.) BMX Products, the same company that sold the Mongoose. We also sold aluminum Race INC. frames.

You guessed it. In two years', time the BMX demand had spread across the entire country and all the Schwinn Sales Companies demanded serious BMX models for the Schwinn line. Unfortunately, due to that original choice to lag behind and take a wait and see approach, the die had been cast and Schwinn lost its hold on the Juvenile/Youth market. No matter how much it then invested into BMX, with a factory race team, paid professional riders, sponsored races, etc. they never recovered the model segment sales.

It seems so easy today, to look back 45 years, and be able to forecast the "crystal clear future".

What’s funny is just after I started this thread, a green typhoon came up on my local CL…
by the time I contacted the seller, he said a buyer was on the way!
