Ah, excellent point! Totally makes sense when you have a solid cable (wire) instead of a stranded one.

Another reason the cable housings fail at the shifter is water intrusion, especially if the bike is left outside for extended periods of time. I always like to pack that end with some waterproof marine grease to help keep the water out.......

Yeah, I believe that's what happened to this bike, as that's how it was when I got it...and you could tell the bike had been left out back for a while.

Saw this today on ebay! The description alone makes it worth the money!

Step up your cycling experience with the classic 1979 Schwinn Spitfire 5, a bike that seamlessly blends vintage aesthetics with timeless design. This black beauty boasts a robust 26" wheel size, ensuring a smooth ride whether you're cruising through the neighborhood or taking on more challenging terrain.Proudly made in the United States, the Spitfire 5 represents the quintessence of American craftsmanship in cycling. The iconic Schwinn brand is synonymous with quality and durability, making this bike not just a means of transportation, but a piece of history that can be cherished for years to come. Could use minor refurbishment."

Very Fair price purchase on this 1979 Schwinn Spitfire 5 yesterday, paint is not the greatest but has some nice parts, really good pair of used Uniroyal Nobby white wall tires.
Serial Number KPxxxxxx ... October 1978 / Badge 0879 ... March 28, 1979.
Another indicator that the October 1978 frames were used on the 1979 Spitfire 5 bicycles

sweet find, no paper clip?

So what’s the opinion on the stock Mesinger seats found on the Klunker 5, Spitfire 5 and other early models? You know, the 15-pounders. I’ve got an OG Spitfire 5 with a different seat, and I’m considerIng a correct seat if they’re comfortable, not so much for correctness (though the rest of the bike except tires is factory). Thanks.
