There are a few spray paints made in aerosol cans allegedly replicating a chrome finish. Since I can find no companies to re chrome plastic, what have you people used? Sorry if this question has been answered on this forum earlier. Thanks in advance.
Silver paint always looks like silver paint. There are some chrome like specialty paints for model car folks, but they don't hold up to wear and sunlight. SOME powder coats can look almost chrome like, but again, don't hold up to wear and sunlight. JC Whitney probably sold "Gleaming Chrome in a Can", but it probably didn't work.
Check out YouTube. There’s a couple videos where the guys test a bunch of cans of paint and it shows you what the paint looks like. I can’t remember now which one was the best.
I like the antique paints with less bright colors that from a distance look more like an older repaint of aluminum, silver or the like.
For example, Rust-Oleum antique pewter, is a darker muted silver-gray (german silver?).
I also use primer on plastic, even though we know that plastic doesn’t rust.
Sometimes mixing silver-tone paints with other shiny chrome parts might not look very good; but nice-enough for a refurbishment.
My buddy has over 5K model cars and he has alot of plastic parts rechromed, I don't think it's cheap and I don't know who does it but I can ask him if you want. Its probably only worth it on valuable models. I know he bought a Model car bumper for $80 just to have it rechromed which I thought was crazy. But he's into models like some Cabers are into bikes.
