Mark, I have not heard anything about Schwinn Shops being encouraged to have a Clown Bike for a loaner or rent.

I was at our family-owned (2) Schwinn shops in Arizona from 1958 to 1978, and then worked in the bicycle industry calling on dealers in Southern and Northern California from 1978 to 1994.

Maybe it was something Harry Wilson Sales Agency (in Commerce) the independent Schwinn Distributor came up with?

John

@Schwinn Sales West, Ron owner of Pat’s told me that & also heard that at Russell's & Paramount Schwinn, all the local school/church carnivals we went to ( SanGabrial Valley/OC ) had them with the local bike shop advertised on them, they probably rented them cheap for the fundraising, good advertising that left a good impression on a lot of future customers. I’ll have to ask Jon/Klocker’s about this

There were a couple clown bikes at Neil's Schwinn in Anaheim. They were displayed on a shelf in the showroom. In the time that I worked there (3 years), they never moved from that spot.

Who knows, maybe the insurance liability got to them by 78 but in the 60’s all the shops around here had them and I’m speaking from personal experience of seeing, riding and buying them, I’m going to have to ask the Owners of Bellflower bike shop if they found anything, the old owners bought Russell‘s from the og family.

Ask Buddy Campbell or Dave Hanson.

What yrs did you work there?, seem like by the 70’s most of the shops clown bikes ended up on the wall or stored in the back room probably because of insurance, there was always one kid going too far and getting bucked off!
