Chrome plating is not illegal in California... Using hexavalent chromium will be after 2027, and good riddance- it is nasty stuff. Trivalent chrome is and will be legal. It is a different process and some shops won't bother to adapt.
Hex chrome although highly toxic, is here to stay until a suitable replacement has been developed. Hex chrome, known as hard chrome, has unique deposit characteristics along with other functional metal finishes used for critical components in both military and commercial applications. Aircraft landing gear, heavy equipment hydraulics, optical surfaces to name a few. Applications for hex chrome and tri chrome are not interchangeable. Bike chrome, car chrome, toaster chrome etc. is all decorative. Hex chrome is functional and although California can regulate it into banishment through red tape, excessive fees and crippling oversight, it will still be here or Arizona (outside the imaginary bubble hanging over this state) or eventually in India or China along with the jobs and the decades of intellectual property associated with it.
