Sunset~ave_schwinn

Finally riding a big boys bike
I picked this up recently 24” schwinn and the serial # was used 3 times (52, 53, & 57) and no model on the chain guard…it has S2 rims, ND (R) & script (F) hubs, script tear drop grips, big aluminum head badge, AS seat clamp, standard sprocket/cog..and the last thing is schwinn stamped bottom bearing cups. I read those came out in 55’? So I’m assuming it’s a 57’..can anyone confirm the year/possible model? And tell me what are the correct pedals for it..and/or wants missing, incorrect, correct, etc..I was also thinking of adding truss rods for the look, what size should they be 3/8 or 1/2?
Thanks. Here’s the picture to help

Is there any evidence of a decal or screening saying Schwinn METEOR on the chainguard?

The 1953 Schwinn Model Number J80 had all of the features seen in your bike including the full sized chainguard not seen in other 24" J80s girl's bikes of the period. Even the black Koroseal seatcover is correct for the girl's (but not the boy's) version. Someone will be along shortly with a final ID.

It's a really beautiful bike.

No evidence of screening on it, looks like it never had a screen print in the area.
The 53 has j80 looks like this maroon 49’ 24inch I had for a couple of months..yea these balloon tires bikes are frustrating, but they do look cool.

Pull the front axle….I think they are dated
Great idea!..I need to go through the bike anyway so hopefully it is dated..if anything I’ll pick a model to turn it into,,I just want a year conformation so I know what period correct parts I’ll need and/or already have.

I think you are safe sticking with the 1953 as your target date. By 1957, the Phantom and the WASP were the only two balloon tire bikes left and the 1951 and 1952 J80 bikes both had the #5803 chainguard like your 1949. Some of the guys here have had experience with un-named chainguards, but I haven't. The dark green was used on the METEOR. Maybe pulling the crank will give you some help.

I think you have received some good advice already. I would add that the Continental tires are not correct. If you can find some 24 x 2.125 Typhoons that would work. The pedals you want to source are 1/2" rubber junior width pedals (no reflector), we commonly called them ladies pedals because they are just slightly narrower than a men's pedal. Not to be confused with the juvenile width pedals used on the 16" wheel pixies, and 12" Lil Tigers.

It's not a 57 since it's a balloon model. Many of the models prior to 1953 did not have a chain guard model name decal. The name decals started on these models in 1953. Also, some of these models were equipped with a bolt on stand and rolled stem starting in 1953. My bet is that's a 1952 model.

can you upload a photo of the pedals? so I know what to visually look for…I’ve seen some with no stamping some with schwinn stamping instead of the AS like on the phantoms
