1980 Murray Baja
Riding Chino Hills State Park, CA
20230825_093705.jpg

My first mountain bike was a Kos- I couldn't afford the cooks frames in Murdochs shop in Crested Butte. I loved my Kos- looking for one now but the prices seem to be heading up...

Nice clean Baja!

The Kos Cruisers command serious prices and have for some time. A compromise might be a chrome Mongoose ATB. They turn up frequently on Ebay and have the Pro Class wheels and cool riveted BMX Products Inc badge. I waaaaay overpaid for mine back in 2006, getting into a bidding war with another dude who also mistakenly thought it was as valuable as a Kos. 😂 I love mine - just a great riding bike that gets a lot of looks.

Now that's a classic Mongoose! Thanks for the share .. .

Been working on this 1985 Rocky Mountain Discovery. Got the frame only as a payment for fixing up a friend's Ritchey P23. Finally found a fork that would fit (and I could get for free). Then another pal had a Tange headset that didn't fit any of his bikes, but did fit this one perfectly. According to my Sutherland's manual, it's called 'Professional' size. The rest of the gruppo is strictly spare parts from scrounge bins, although it does have a new cartridge bottom bracket.

I think not too many of this model - one year only and positioned as a touring/gravel bike. Many Rocky Mountain frames were welded in Canada at the time, but this one is imported from Japan using Tange tubing.

Handles okay, but the bottom bracket seems relatively high off the ground. I guess it was supposed to get over rocks and roots more easily that way. I do feel the centre of gravity is higher than the mid 90's MTBs I have been riding lately.

Looking forward to riding it through autumn, when it rains here sometimes. Was surprised at price of fenders - last time I bought Planet Bike fenders was 2019 when they were $35 CAD. Now they are $89 CAD!
