Looks like a fun project Mac Man! Appears the derailleur is original. No spoke protector? Looking at the chain ring and cables this one is fresh from the wild.
Do you know what the "LA" stamp above the serial is? I've seen this same stamp on another bike recently and I'm guessing it's a registration stamp for some municipality, but that's just a guess. Here's the "LA" stamp on another bike, a 1941 New World (post #32) :
Looks like similar construction to my 50 year model New World, EF drop outs to stays. Is the seat tube EFed to the BB like this? I think everything else was brazed, but not everything was smoothed out...but mine has the 4mm thick drop outs. The war time J series New Worlds had the seat post...

This is one that was listed on FBM two days ago in Florida in pretty nice original shape for $400.00. I thought that was very reasonable for the condition and evidently someone else thought so too, because it's already sold. These are the seller's pictures:

Looks like the spoke protector has been replaced, small protector with cut-outs.
