1973 Schwinn Speedster.
We were looking for a cheap bike to upgrade a vintage air bike type excersize machine. It had plastic crank bushings that had worn out & the crank was just a bent rod with a sprocket spot welded to it but the frame has a conventional bottom bracket size to accept a pressed in regular size bearing cup, bearing cassets & crank with adjustable cones. To make a long story short we drove all over playing musical parts to get a crank with the right spacing to fit the chain guard & not rub, had to use parts from one of the spare bikes hanging in the garage & then repair that bike with somthing or another I forget what at the moment.
Anyway, In my travels I saw a Schwinn on the top of a pile of bikes @ The Habitat For Humanity thrift store in Bellingham that caught my eye. At first I thought it might be a later Japan made Schwinn & a suitable donor But didn't get it at the time I was there.
Later I couldn't stop thinking about the bike, It looked barley used & the next day I went back to see if it was still there, found it haggled with the guy to knock 30 bucks off & picked it up for 50 bucks.
After going through it I saw it was used but originally was in pretty good shape. I think it was rode until the spokes went loose & then put up & the grease & oil in the bearings & Sturmy Archer 3 speed hub turned to wax, things got stickey & gears wouldnt shift. Whoever It was that tried to service it bought a brand new set of kenda 26 x 1 3/8 tires for it & started to take the rear hub apart but lost its oddball size axle nut (Whitworth?) & waffle frame grip axle washer. I found a nos one on eBay from a Sturmey Archer vendor, oh I also replaced the broken shifter with a nos SA shifter kit with the plastic see through cover that always breaks...
I bought a cheap truing stand from Amazon & also a spoke tension gauge tool & spent weeks cleaning things up & getting it back into shape, ever wonder how long it takes to polish a vintage bike basket? you don't wanna know... I also swapped the seat for a Schwinn S logo spring suspension seat & masked it off & sprayed it with white vinyl/carpet dye from Oreillys. That seat frame & innards also took forever to polish up...
Great riding bike, it really moves out! & been all over town with it. Unfortunately the new tires have flat spots from sitting flat for who knows how long, I tried centering the rear one on the rim aired down some & with the aid of some baby powder to help things slip & re adjust. Much better but still thumps alittle as you ride, Rims are perfect tho. Thinking about new tires, mabie another set of classic looking ribbed black ones or mabie some whitewalls like my Suburban has. I was also looking at a set of Duro red line street tires but everyones out of stock.

Heres another one just like mine on Craigslist that is MINT, He wants 4fiddy tho...
