Wore out three sets of tires already!
This one came out of the Chicago area. A guy on FB was selling it and had been riding it around town. I received it this summer and have been tinkering with it off and on since. I figured I would take some pics and throw it out there, since there hasn't been much action in the Schwinn Lightweight forum lately.

Overall, it's in decent shape, and the paint came back with some polishing. It was missing the correct stem, bars, grips, brake levers, brake lines/housings, front fender and brace, saddle, pedals and stand. It's not easy piecing a bike back together. Luckily, many of the parts I had on hand. Pictures of it as purchased at the end.

The biggest hurdle was finding a replacement front fender and brace. I ended up finding a tandem fender with the same paint color. Unfortunately, the brace was the wrong type. I thought I would pull a brace from a 40s Continental fender I have and use it. Nope. It's not the right length. I ended up fabricating my own. It turned out well. Maybe a correct fender and brace will turn up at some point, but this will do until then.

Specs: 23" frame, Serial B10004, maroon paint w/ red and green pinstripes, Schwinn superior wheels, 3-piece crank w/ AS&CO chain ring, Dural front hub, Sturmey Archer AW 3-speed rear hub and Sturmey Archer quadrant shifter, Schwinn script cushion grips, Schwinn Superior saddle (although I think this is a slightly later version) w/ Schwinn script seat post, Schwinn razor stem, front / rear brakes, Torrington 7 pedals, Miller stand.

Some other bikes I have posted:

Nicely recaptured. Early Superiors still seem uncommon, which makes the ones with serial numbers of B10004 and even higher a bit surprising. I have seen numbers as low as B198 and as high as B17373, and numbers consistently sprinkled in between, suggesting close to 20,000 Superiors may have been uilt between 1938 and the early 1940s, likely 20X the number of Paramounts built. Your work on this one is commendable.

Nice save on that near extinct bird! This is the only one I've seen with 5 numbers in the serial number. And every Superior I've seen had the B alpha. Has anyone ever seen a different alpha on a Superior?

All of the prewar Superiors were numbered with the B prefix.
The Prewar Paramounts had an A prefix.
A = Paramount
B= Superior

Wow, what a rare find! And a tall frame too. 👍 Great job with the front fender. The paint/decals are in amazing condition.

I was always of the same understanding...plus that the earliest New Worlds were "C" serial numbers (these were the New Worlds with the rear-facing dropouts)....but then an early Superior track frame showed up on an auction site a couple of years ago with a D3007 serial number....the only non-B early Superior I have seen. Who knows....there is always something that pulls the rug out from 'certainty.'

That frame is for sale on FB.
