Look Ma, No Hands!
For context, I am talking about the Schwinn Deluxe Stingray NOT the Super Deluxe model.
So this might seem like a rhetorical question with a rhetorical answer, but I have to know because this has been driving me crazy. So when I first researched Schwinn bikes my understanding was the deluxe headset was used on all Schwinn deluxe model bikes, then I learned from
an eBay seller's listing that from 1947-1965 the deluxe headset was used on all Schwinn deluxe model bikes.* (see the link below).
*Here's the link to the listing about the Deluxe headset:Vintage Schwinn Bike HEADSET Stingray Krate Bicycle Phantom B6 DX Tank Cruiser 1947-1965 Deluxe HS
This is confusing me
First of all, because every listing on eBay where I see the deluxe headset listed everyone says it's from 1963 and 1964.
Second, everyone I've talked to are telling me the deluxe headset was never on any of their 65 deluxe stingrays.
Third/finally when I look at pictures from the book: Standard Catalog of Schwinn Bicycles 1985-2004 by Doug Mitchel I can find the deluxe headset on non-deluxe Schwinn bikes, but when I look at early 60's and mid 60's models of the Stingray I don't see that, I see the standard headset.
At this point, I'm so confused because it would seem that the deluxe model headset was used on a deluxe stingray. But now I have no clue, it leaves me with more questions than answers it seems.
So I have a 1965 Schwinn deluxe stingray that I got from a friend I am working on restoring right now. My question is for the 1965 Schwinn Deluxe Stingrays did they use the deluxe headset on that model for that year? or was it a standard headset stamped with a funnel stamped on the adjusting headrace?* (see the link below).
People were asking under this forum about symbols for headsets and bottom brackets and if they went with a certain year and so on: What Does the Symbol Stamp on Schwinn Stingray's Mean
For me right now I am stuck between a rock and a hard place because now it's leaving me with no real solid answers, because I have a deluxe headset from a 1963 Schwinn Racer (non-deluxe model), that I was going to put on this 1965 Schwinn Deluxe Stingray, but I am finding on eBay the headset with the funnel stamped on it, and as I said now I am at a standstill.
So does somebody know about this topic?
Why is there a lot of confusion it seems over this topic?
Was the deluxe headset used until 1965 or did it change after 1962?
Which headset was used on Deluxe Stingrays? Was it the standard headset with a symbol stamped on the adjusting race to note the year or was it the Deluxe headset?
I could go on and on and on with the questions that I have regarding the deluxe headset versus the standard headset and the symbols and all that. I just hope someone can give me some answer(s) and quickly.
Thank you in advance, to any and all people who provide me an answer.
